Catalyst Your Career Confidence Catalyst Your Career Confidence Catalyst Your Career Confidence October 13, 2013 via Career Coach Sherri Thomas Leave a Comment You are the narrator of your own profession. Consistently, individuals are making recognitions and making assumptions about you dependent on what youre letting them know. On the off chance that youre sending the message that youve been bamboozled, ignored or stepped on in your profession, at that point individuals will consider you to be somebody who doesnt have a lot of significant worth in the work environment. BUT(!) if youre send a solid, clear message that youre a key supporter with some enormous triumphs added to your repertoire, then managers, recruiting supervisors and Sr. leaders will be bound to give you work drives, propositions for employment and greater profession openings. Here are a couple of tips to assist you with surrounding your profession story Quit being so unassuming. Being humble is a vocation stifller. Indeed, it's a pleasant quality to have, however on the off chance that you never talk about a portion of the victories you've had in the working environment, at that point your vocation makes certain to sit on a rack for the following 10 years. I ate yesterday with probably the closest companion from school, Arizona State University (Go Sun Devils! :)) who turned into an Emmy winning TV correspondent for NBC-TV in Phoenix. Now, at 50-years of age, he has his own company AZ Freelance TV exhorting Corporate pioneers as a Media Strategist. He told me that he's prepared to extend his business, however Im not the kind of individual to boast about myself. This is a man who has talked with three (3) U.S. Presidents (Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bramble.) Truly? How might anybody ever know to employ him on the off chance that he didnt talk about his triumphs? Discussing your achievements assembles your believability. It tells individuals what you're acceptable at, what you can deal with and what you can achieve. It makes you stand apart from the group. On the off chance that you need to get saw, at that point you'll have to figure out how to discuss your accomplishments, not in a haughty sort of way, yet more in an I'm a key supporter who gets large outcomes sort of way. Record 2-3 of your greatest accomplishments in the course of recent years. Presently, work on saying so anyone can hear in a sentence or two how you added to those victories and what the effect was to the association. For instance, I was the specialized lead for another interior apparatus that was propelled on the SAP stage. The device is presently sparing the group $100,000 every year. Or then again, I was on the innovative advertising effort for the xyz item which helped the organization gain 3% more piece of the pie. The way to landing more position offers, leads and openings is inclining how to discuss your triumphs. No one will realize what you've achieved except if you let them know. 2. Edge your story in a positive manner. One of my preferred parts in my new book, The Bounce Back gives techniques on the best way to outline your story to employing supervisors after you've been laid off or encountered a lifelong misfortune. Chiefs, Sr. pioneers, clients, and employing supervisors make their view of you dependent on what you let them know. In the event that you talk about your vocation in a positive, sure way â€" at that point they are going to consider you a positive and sure worker. Prior in my profession I was laid off at a little publicizing agency. A couple of months after the fact, I ricocheted back and was recruited as the Regional Marketing Manager for a Fortune 100 organization. I accept that a huge piece of I because employed was a result of the manner in which I recounted to my profession story to the Vice President. During the meeting, I discussed how the organization that laid me off was an extraordinary organization and the amount I adored my job and duties. I really had faith in what I was stating thus my tone was exceptionally real. At that point, I tended to the explanation behind my cutback which was, I didn't understand when I took the position that I was required to fill the shoes of two workers. Despite the fact that I had some large outcomes and was acceptable at my particular employment, I basically couldn't fill both of their shoes. The VP considered me the following day to disclose to me I was recruited. Everyone has difficulties in their career. E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y. Its not the difficulty that keeps you down, however how you disguise the misfortune. The key is to outline your profession story in the best, legit and certain way that is available. 3. Try not to remove yourself from the game since you bumbled. I had a TV meet a couple of months back and the columnist got some information about my book. I solidified up. I got anxious, said umm and distorted out a couple of weak sentences. Man-goodness man, I wish I could have a do-over. It happens to us all. Regardless of whether it's a prospective employee meet-up, a major introduction or the ideal systems administration opportunity â€" once in a while, we simply freeze up. It occurs, and it happens to everybody. The key isn't to whip yourself. Furthermore, don't avoid future chances to give a major introduction or go on prospective employee meet-ups. The exercise is to gain from the circumstance and afterward improve next time. Keep looking for chances to step into the spotlight and recount to your story over and over. On the off chance that you mishandled an introduction, at that point go inquire as to whether you can give it again some new information that you simply got. On the off chance that you bungled a job interview, at that point send an email to the questioner giving somewhat more clearness on your experience or subject matter. For me, I kept in touch with the TV journalist and teed up a couple of more tips out of my book to impart to her watchers, and afterward had a ?? â€" â€" - Sherri Thomas is a Career Strategist. Scaramucci demonstrates the wrong way to handle conflict with co-workers

Scaramucci exhibits the incorrect method to deal with strife with associates Scaramucci exhibits the incorrect method to deal with strife with associates White House interchanges executive Anthony Scaramucci has just had the activity for not exactly seven days, however he's now making open enemies. After his legislature budgetary divulgence structure showed up on Politico on Wednesday, Scaramucci didn't think the data was open information, as Politico had announced. He quickly accepted that the data more likely than not been spilled and he pledged to discover the leaker that night.Scaramucci previously had a thought of who it may be-however no clear evidence and he opened up to the world about his speculation. In a since-erased tweet, Scaramucci said that he would contact government specialists - explicitly the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice-to discover the leaker and incorporated the Twitter handle of White House head of staff Reince Priebus. New Yorker author Ryan Lizza affirmed that Scaramucci intended to suggest that Priebus was involved.Scaramucci has recently said that he and Priebus have been close companions for a long time who are somewhat like siblings, where we mess each other up a bit, which is absolutely typical for siblings. But this most recent open question gives off an impression of being in excess of a loving altercation. Scaramucci later explained that his tweet was definitely not an immediate assault at Priebus, however an open notification to leakers that all Sr Adm [senior administration] authorities are assisting with completion illicit leaks. But he likewise finished that explaining tweet by again including the Twitter handle of Priebus. There's parcels to unload here about Scaramucci's tweet and ensuing press visit. Regardless of whether you're a community worker to the U.S. government or an office specialist, here are a couple of takeaways on how not to deal with relational clash at work.1. Don't @ the FBIThis ought to abandon saying, yet please investigate approaches to tackle your contention without including government law implementation. Start lower, as wi th perhaps your supervisor or human resources.2. Try not to take it publicPeople severely dislike being openly mortified, and it's a decent method to make a perpetual adversary. Tweeting at your boss in a negative post resembles CC'ing your supervisor in an email offending them. Not exclusively is it very amateurish to air your filthy clothing out in the open, it likewise plants strife, disarray and mayhem among your staff.According to certain columnists, notwithstanding, that might be actually Scaramucci's goal.3. Try not to make allegations without proofWhatever your picked strategy for appropriation for your complaints - regardless of whether it is web based life (impractical notion) or a private discussion - be capable about your words. Try not to air your warmed doubts about your partner except if you can back them up with in excess of a hunch. At the point when you get the evidence and can show the outcome, at that point you go to higher powers. So far, it's hazy if the arrival of Scaramucci's revelation structures was really unlawful. Politico said it got the records since it was freely accessible upon demand. Under government law, it's alright to demand to peruse such a report 30 days after it's been documented. That constrained Scaramucci to erase his dangerous tweet, which made him look confounded and unreliable. The enormous takeaway? Try not to make allegations you can't back up. It harms your notoriety and frees you up to disdain, much like the wild open joke Scaramucci has looked since pursuing his war against Priebus.4. Try not to make it personalScaramucci's unobtrusive and not really inconspicuous punches at Priebus go past assaults on his partner's capacity to carry out his responsibility. They are immediate assaults on Priebus' character. The day after he suggested Priebus was a criminal, Scaramucci let the allegation hang without clearing it up.When I put out a tweet and I put Reince's name in a tweet, they're all making the supposition that it's him since columnists know who the leakers are, Scaramucci said in a CNN talk with Thursday. So if Reince needs to clarify he's not a leaker, let him do that. Be that as it may, let me inform you regarding myself. I'm an honest person and I'll go right to the core of the matter.Implying that Reince is definitely not an honest person isn't a ringing support of Priebus' character, and it makes an effectively chaotic circumstance messier and uglier. Engaging the court of general conclusion ought to be a final hotel. Inward intercession among you and the associate causing you struggle should consistently come first. What's the punishment on the off chance that you don't follow these means? Reputational hurt. Scaramucci, after just a single week in the activity - and still without legitimate leeway - has made his open picture about infighting and injustice towards an associate, as opposed to speaking to the President's position. Individuals from the media straightforwardly called his remarks among the craziest they had ever found in legislative issues. Anticipating uncertainty and insecurity for the most part won't assist you with expressing what is on your mind or get greater assignments. Figuring out how to deal with strife tranquilly and adequately will go a lot further.

How to Ace a Phone Interview in 10 Easy Steps - Workology

How to Ace a Phone Interview in 10 Easy Steps - Workology How to Ace a Phone Interview in 10 Easy Steps Phone interviews have become a common part of the hiring process. But the funny thing is that most job seekers seem to ignore them. Think about it: You spend hours writing the perfect resume, and you gnaw your fingernails to the quick stressing about your upcoming meeting with the hiring manager. But the phone interview? You either forget about it or give it little more than a passing thought. But wait! The phone interview could be what makes or breaks your chances for an in-person interview. Hiring managers use phone interviews to narrow down a large list of applicants who all look similar on paper to select those who will be called in for a personal interview. How to Ace a Phone Interview in 10 Easy Steps Now that I’ve gotten your ear, here are 10 tips that could help you ace a phone interview: 1) Pick a private spot. If a company has scheduled a time for a phone interview with you, don’t just figure you’ll pick up the phone whenever the call comes in. Give it advance prep. First, select a location that’s quiet and free of distractions. That means your home office, not the local Starbucks. You don’t want to have to fight with the coffee grinder to be heard. If you have children or pets at home, arrange for someone to come over to watch them, or be sure they have an activity to keep them busy for the duration of the call. 2) Don’t do it at work. A friend of mine once told me that he was sitting in his company’s break room when a coworker walked in and settled down for a phone interview with another employer. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} I hope you’re all smart enough to realize that the office is not the best place to do a phone interview. In fact, few places could be worse. Don’t even think about doing it at work, even if you have a private office. It’s unethical, and you’re likely to tip off your employer to your intentions. If you must take part in a phone interview during work hours, try to schedule it for your lunch break. Then, drive to a nearby parking lot and take the call from your car. 3) Go old school. Whenever possible, use a land line to ensure a strong, clear connection. If you must use a cell phone, try to select a spot where you can be confident you’ll get good reception. 4) Remember, you have voice mail for a reason. If another call comes in while you’re talking to the hiring manager, ignore it. Phone interviews rarely last more than 15 or 30 minutes, and whoever rang can very likely wait that long for a call back. You want to show the hiring manager there is nothing more important at that moment than convincing him or her of your ability to do the job. .ai-rotate {position: relative;} .ai-rotate-hidden {visibility: hidden;} .ai-rotate-hidden-2 {position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%;} .ai-list-data, .ai-ip-data, .ai-fallback, .ai-list-block {visibility: hidden; position: absolute; width: 50%; height: 1px; z-index: -9999;} 5) Fire up your printer. A phone interview is like an open-book test. You’re allowed to have reference materials in front of you! Take advantage of this and print out two items ahead of time: your resume and the job posting. Why not just pull them up on the computer screen? I like to print out these documents so I can review them with a highlighter and pen in hand. I then mark important points and write brief notes to myself (“Emphasize communication skills”). We all know that interviews can move quickly, and even when you feel prepared, your mind can suddenly go blank. The quick comments you jotted down can be enough to kick your brain back into gear. They’ll also prevent you from forgetting a key skill or achievement that might help you get the job. 6) Prepare, prepare, prepare. Some job candidates mistakenly think they can wing it when it comes to a phone interview. Sure, it’s usually shorter than an in-person interview, and the questions are often less intense. But don’t forget that your performance determines whether or not you’ll make it to the next round in the hiring process. With so much riding on the phone interview, why not prepare as diligently as you would for the in-person variety? 7) Rehearse your answers. The purpose of a phone interview is usually to confirm that you have genuine interest in the position and the skills and experience to do the job. So, you can expect to be asked questions such as: “Can you briefly describe your work history and your most notable accomplishments in previous roles?” “Why did you leave your previous job?” or “Why are you looking for a new position?” “What relevant skills or experience can you bring to the job?” “What interests you about this position?” You also may be asked about your salary requirements. So, research pay trends beforehand and have a range in mind. 8) Flash those pearly whites. It’s important to across as upbeat and engaged. But because the interviewer won’t be able to see your body language, your tone and inflection have to do all the work. My suggestion: Smile when you talk. You’ll come across as more enthusiastic. I don’t know why it works, but, trust me, it does. I also think it’s worth standing (and even walking back and forth a little). Doing so prevents you from slouching, which can come through in your voice, and keeps your energy up. 9) Realize that empty air is OK. Perhaps the most awkward moment during a phone interview is when you finish responding to a question, and the hiring manager doesn’t say anything … for several moments. Does she expect you to say more? Did she think your answer was inadequate? Is she still on the line? What do you do? What you don’t do is continue talking. That’s a good way to say something you’ll later regret. If you feel you’ve provided a strong response, resist the urge to fill empty air. The ball’s in the hiring manager’s court now. 10) Find out what’s next. Don’t let the phone interview end without asking one key question: What’s the next step in the hiring process? It shows you’re interested in the job and will help ease your post-interview jitters by giving you a sense of how you performed. Last but not least: Write a thank-you note. It’s yet another way to say how excited you are about the job and gives you the opportunity to sell your skills one more time. Whats your biggest phone interview fear? Photo Credit.

Storing Heat from Nuclear Power Plants Could Improve Output

Putting away Heat from Nuclear Power Plants Could Improve Output Putting away Heat from Nuclear Power Plants Could Improve Output Putting away Heat from Nuclear Power Plants Could Improve Output The tale of human development is particularly interlaced with the control of warmth. There is proof that people lit utilizing fire at any rate 300,000 years back, and from that point forward we have consumed carbon fills, for example, wood, coal, oil, and flammable gas. While the cooking fire and the gas turbine are various advancements, their financial aspects are comparative. The labor, assets, and cash are in gathering the fuel and carrying it to the fire. The expense of the cooking fire or gas turbine is little comparative with the expense of fuel. It is financial to work a cooking fire or gas turbine at low limit factors, killing these machines when vitality request is low. Peruse ASMEs Top Story: 6 Ways Engineers Heal a Broken Heart Low-carbon power changes the financial matters of vitality. Atomic, wind, and sun based have high capital expenses and low working costs; in this way vitality turns out to be over the top expensive if these innovations are worked at part load. On the off chance that these machines are worked at half limit, the expense of vitality creation generally pairs. For non-dispatchable breeze and sun based offices, it implies that at whatever point the breeze blows or the sun sparkles, administrators will utilize those plants to deliver as much power as possible, regardless of whether it orders a low cost. That kind of income breakdown has become a developing reality over the most recent quite a long while in Europe, the United States, Japan, and China, and could deliver a genuine delay the extension of those sources sooner rather than later. The reshaping of the force business has hit atomic particularly hard. Most existing light-water reactors were worked to give steady baseload power at trustworthy costs as opposed to suit the instability and changeability inborn in sunlight based and wind power. During specific seasons in some force advertises, the net loadthe distinction between power request and the force provided by non-dispatchable breeze and sunlight based facilitiescan flood by numerous gigawatts between the early evening and early night. Atomic force plants were never intended to deal with such swings. The arrangement that is generally proposed to address such difficulties is vitality stockpiling. Wind and photovoltaic (PV) frameworks produce power and in this manner couple well to innovations that store work, for example, batteries or siphoned hydropower. The work is put away in the midst of abundance power creation and changed over to power available to be purchased on occasion of significant expenses. Tune in to the most recent scene of ASME TechCast: Breakthrough Could Bring New Cancer Treatment In any case, vitality can likewise be put away as warmth. Concentrated sun oriented plants have been intended to store warm vitality in order to deliver power after twilight, however heat stockpiling ought to likewise hold any importance with administrators of atomic force plants. With strategy objectives to diminish ozone harming substance outflows making impetuses to bring on the web however much factor sunlight based and wind power as could be expected, coupling atomic force and warmth stockpiling is a path for atomic plants to change from fundamentally base-load suppliers of power to giving variable power to the network and at last turning out to be purchasers and dealers of power. Adding heat stockpiling to light-water reactors is the empowering innovation for a sans carbon power industry dependent on sun oriented, wind, and atomic force. Also, it can achieve this with little interruption to the tasks of existing atomic plants. Framework Scale Potential Area warming amassing tower close Krems a der Donau, Austria, with a warm limit of 2GWh. Picture: Bwag/Wikimedia Commons Warmth stockpiling for variable power creation is an old innovation. The primary huge scope heat stockpiling framework for power creation was the Charlottenburg Power Station steam aggregators worked in Berlin in 1929. The gatherer framework was contained 16 tanks, each 4.3 meters in distance across and 20 meters high, that were accused of steam from a coal kettle on occasion of low power request. During appeal, the steam discharged by the collectors drove a turbine with a pinnacle power yield of 50 MWe. From that start, heat stockpiling limit has developed to matrix scale. Today heat stockpiling frameworks coupled to concentrated sunlight based force frameworks have limits more than a GWh(t) to empower power creation after dusk now and again of higher power costs. Conversely, battery storerooms are restricted to the megawatt-hour scale. Furthermore, potential for every innovation is reflected in the drawn out cost objectives set by the U.S. Branch of Energy. The objective for battery stockpiling is to reach $150 per kWh of power stockpiling limit, in addition to about a similar sum for the establishment of intensity change and other expected frameworks to couple to the matrix; if a battery stockpiling framework can arrive at that objective, it will dramatically increase power costs. By correlation, the DOE objective for warm vitality stockpiling for use at a concentrated sun based force plant is $15 per kWh of warmth stockpiling limit. Warmth stockpiling is significantly less costly than work stockpiling. Discover More about Offshore Wind Energy by Registering for ASMEs Summit Warmth stockpiling advances that can be coupled to atomic force plants can be separated into six classes, each at various conditions of availability to be conveyed. It isn't likely that there will be a solitary innovation in view of contrasts in the market. A market with enormous scope sun powered has an every day pattern of low-and costly power though a market with huge scope wind sees a multiday pattern of low-value power. Of those six classes, two can be viewed as practical in the close to term: Steam amassing and fluid reasonable warmth stockpiling. A steam collector is a weight vessel almost loaded with water that is warmed to its immersion temperature by steam infusion. The warmth is put away as high-temperature high-pressure water; when steam is required, valves open and a portion of the water is flashed to steam that is sent to a turbine or feed-water radiators creating power while the rest of the water diminishes in temperature. The innovation is commercialremember, it was conveyed at Charlottenburg in 1929and has been sent at a few concentrated sunlight based warm force stations. It has the upside of a quicker reaction than some other warmth stockpiling framework, making it appropriate for the sort of speedy increase expected to suit exceptionally factor sustainable power source. Reasonable warmth stockpiling is somehow or another like a steam gatherer. It includes warming a subsequent liquid (instead of water) with steam, putting away that hot liquid at environmental weight, and utilizing that liquid sometime in the not too distant future to give the warmth to deliver steam, which is then sent to a turbine. Many concentrated sun oriented force frameworks store heat in tanks of blistering salt or sweltering oil to empower power yield from the steam cycle after the sun sets. Westinghouse has started advancement of a reasonable warmth stockpiling framework for light water reactors. In that framework, steam warms a low-pressure heat-move oil which at that point moves its warmth to a warmth stockpiling module in which vertical solid plates fill in as the essential warmth stockpiling medium as opposed to the warmth move oil. Concrete is utilized on the grounds that it is a more affordable warmth stockpiling medium than oil. The hot oil courses through limited channels between sections of cement. To recoup the warmth, the heading of oil stream is switched. The hot oil would be utilized to create steam that can be utilized in either the primary power source turbine, a different force framework, or as a halfway trade for steam to take care of water radiators. Fluid Air and Solid Rock Four different ideas show a lot of potential for putting away warmth from light water reactors, yet none are prepared for sending. For example, cryogenic air vitality stockpiling frameworks hold heat as condensed air that can be put away in offices like those that store melted flammable gas. The air would be condensed when power costs are low; when power request called for it, the fluid air would be packed, warmed utilizing low-temperature heat from an atomic force plants cooling water, at that point additionally warmed with steam from the reactor and sent through an air turbine before being depleted to the environment. The full circle proficiency for this innovation coupled to a LWR is assessed to be more than 70 percent. The distinctive component of cryogenic air vitality stockpiling is that the top to-baseload power yield is higher than for other warmth stockpiling frameworks. A pilot office coupled to a biofuels power plant is currently working in the United Kingdom, yet it will be some time before a framework is advanced for atomic force plants. Another conceptstoring heat in a volume of squashed rockis basic and highlights the most reduced gradual warmth stockpiling costs. To charge the framework, steam from the reactor warms air by means of a warmth exchanger, and afterward that tourist circulates through squashed stone, which ingests the warmth and can be raised to self-assertively high temperatures. To remove the warmth, the progression of air inverts, completing vitality of the stone to a warmth exchanger to create steam for a turbine. Peruse More Energy Insights: U.S. Can Learn From Texas Surge in Wind and Solar Power This stockpiling innovation is being produced for concentrated sun powered warm force frameworks with a few pilot plants worldwide where the warmth input is sight-seeing from the sunlight based force tower. Also, Siemens is building up a variation for use with wind frameworks that depends on electric obstruction radiators to deliver the tourist. Rather than utilizing steam to make superheated air, the steam can be utilized straightforwardly to warm rocks or some other strong material. This stuffed bed warm vitality stockpiling framework comprises of a weight vessel loaded up with strong stones with a steam valve at the top and water outlet at the base. Warmth is

How to treat others

How to treat others How you treat others establishes the foundation on which you will build your personal lifeand your professional career. Maintaining equitable relationships with respect and consideration will garner a highly esteemed reputation and increase the potential for a lifetime of opportunities. The following five lessons about how to treat people wasforwarded in an email andis worth the read: First Important Lesson Cleaning Lady During my second month of college, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions until I read the last one: What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school? Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall,dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Just before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade. Absolutely, said the professor.. In your careers, you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do issmile and say hello.. Ive never forgotten that lesson.. I also learned her name was Dorothy. Second Important Lesson Pick-up in the rain One night, at 11:30 p.m., an older African American woman wasstanding on the side of an Alabama highway trying to endure alashing rain storm. Her car had broken down and she desperately needed a ride. Soakingwet, she decided to flag down the next car. A young white man stopped to help her, generally unheard of in those conflict-filled 1960s. The man took her to safety, helped her get assistance and put her into a taxicab. She seemed to be in a big hurry, but wrote down his address and thanked him. Seven days went by and a knock came on the mans door. To his surprise, a giant console color TV was delivered to his home.A special note was attached..It read: Thank you so much for assisting me on the highway the other night. The rain drenched not only my clothes, but also my spirits. Then you came along. Because of you, I was able to make it to my dying husbands bedside just before he passed away God Bless you for helping me and unselfishly serving others. Sincerely, Mrs. Nat King Cole Third Important Lesson Always remember those who serve In the days when an ice cream sundae cost much less, a 10-year-old boy entered a hotel coffee shop and sat at a table. A waitress put a glass of water in front of him. How much is an ice cream sundae? he asked. Twenty-five cents, replied the waitress. The little boy pulled his hand out of his pocket and studied the coins in it. Well, how much is a plain dish of ice cream? he inquired. By now more people were waiting for a table and the waitress was growing impatient. Twenty cents, she brusquely replied. The little boy again counted his coins. Ill have the plain ice cream, he said. The waitress brought the ice cream, put the bill on the table and walked away. The boy finished the ice cream, paid the cashier and left. When the waitress came back, she began to cry as she wiped down the table. There, placed neatly beside the empty dish, were two nickels and five pennies. You see, he couldnt have the sundae, because he had to have enough left to leave her a tip. Fourth Important Lesson The obstacle in our path In ancient times, a King had a boulder placed on a roadway. Then he hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the Kings wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it. Many loudly blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the stone out of the way. Then a peasant came along carrying a load of vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. After the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the King indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many of us never understand! Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve our condition. Fifth Important Lesson Giving when it counts Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, Yes Ill do it if it will saveher. As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeingthe color returning to her cheek. Then his facegrew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, Will I start to die right away? Being young, the little boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood in order to save her. Happy Thanksgiving!

5 Tips for Career Planning - Elite Resume - How To Plan Your Career

5 Tips for Career Planning - Elite Resume - How To Plan Your Career Managing your career is not your employers job, nor your favourite recruiters. Its your job. No one else has the same interest and commitment to your career and future as you do. In addition to social media maintenance, networking, and personal branding, every adult should spend some time every month on plans and goals. Below are 5 tips for career planning which will help you get started if youre new to being your own manager, and will help you get organized and stay on course if youre an old hand at it! Chart immediate goals first. Plan 2-5 years out in detail and hold yourself accountable for those plans and goals. Adding a few long-term goals is good, but your primary focus should be on the near future. Any further out than 5 years, and circumstances will change as you grow and develop as a leader. Do you feel that you need more education to reach the next level? Start looking into an MBA, executive MBA, or begin studying for certifications or licenses youll need to accomplish your goals. Concerned theres no room for growth in your current job? Get ready for a job search! Stay flexible. As a colleague of mine points out, Life happens! Keep in mind that your personal and professional life can change quickly, taking you on a journey that looks quite different from your original plan. Starting a family or the need to care for an aging parent can delay your goals or give you a new perspective. A sideways promotion can offer new skills and experience that help you understand that different goals may be a better fit for you. Stay flexible and agile enough to accept and adapt to change as it happens. Value mentoring. Search your network for those who have already travelled a path youd like to follow and ask their advice. Seek out people who are highly skilled leaders and learn from them. Then offer your own experience to others. The best leaders are those who enable their team members to reach their full potential and serve those they lead. Theres no better time to begin learning how to accept and offer valuable leadership! Never stop learning. Great leaders dont rest on their laurels. They recognize there is always a mentor to seek at the next level and something to improve in themselves. Those who feel theyve reached the top and stop pushing themselves, stagnate. A rigid outlook and narrow perspective have tanked more than a few businesses along the way. Youll never become outdated if youre still learning, growing, and reaching for whats next. Celebrate success. From small victories to big wins, take the time to celebrate success in every form. One long, hard push to the top will wear you out before you can reach the first peak, much less the summit! And while you celebrate your personal success, remember to celebrate your employees and your mentors.

The Career Crisis Affecting 30-Something Women No One Is Talking About

The Career Crisis Affecting 30-Something Women No One Is Talking About Ive been conversing with a great deal of my lady friends of late, from all pieces of the world, about our vocations. The reverberating reverberation I get from these discussions is essentially the equivalent: for some, if not a large portion of us, were searching for all the more importance in our work. Its not exactly the self important emotional meltdown, loaded up with insane shoe-shopping events, excursions to fascinating districts or dreams about the ideal man (alright, I saidfantasies). Nor is it the bubbly fever of the quarter-life, loaded up with question marks and existential inquiries of different sorts. This emergency directly here has us question the importance of our work. It makes them ask ourselves inquiries like, Whats my motivation? Whats my energy? Hell, do I have an energy? What am I here to do? [Related:The 5 Stages to Living Your Passion] In the middle of transporting the children to and from school and exercises, making a minute ago supper plans, attempting to ask the clothing ceaselessly, we stop and inquire as to whether were truly satisfying our motivation. Do we at any point have a reason, other than thinking about every other person around, going well beyond busy working, home and wherever in the middle? As messages of female strengthening have been in our face now morethan ever, it is by all accounts progressively hard to keep our capacity. Were approached to kill as we ascend the professional bureaucracy, manufacture organizations, keep up fruitful connections and fellowships, and still discover sufficient opportunity to work out, shed and give the most recent common hair item a shot! Truly? What nobody truly discusses, in any event not uproarious enough, is the way that amidst what might be the greatest accomplishment century for ladies, were essentially depleted! What's more, somewhat lost. Considerably more so as we dont truly get an opportunity topublicly let it be known. [Related:Forget Work/Life Balance. Attempt this Feminine Super Power Instead] While were about sex fairness, female business enterprise and everything boss, savage and killing for ladies, a large number of us are lost. Truly, were killing busy working, at home and in business. Weve landed positions (in the expressions of RHOAs Phaedra Parks), kids, side hustles, feast plans, practice schedules, down to booked closeness. Weve never been busier, yet would we say we are satisfied? Weve never been progressively positive, however would we say we are deliberate? Weve never worn such a significant number of caps, yet would we say we are beneficial? Possibly in this incredible hurry to have everything, do everything, to say the very least, perhaps were skirting a couple of steps. That might be the reason after all the strengthening, the biased based impediment crushing, business commanding and all the killing we can assemble, were still left pondering about what work truly intends to us and how we can truly, really accomplish significance through it. Not the importance the world is searching for, however our own sort of one of a kind, impossible to miss, adaptable significance. Simply look through the courses of events of the vast majority of your lady friends, mine notwithstanding. No doubt, youll see shining pics of glad excursions, flawless family minutes and extraordinary profitability (with the ideal Insta-commendable foundation, as well.) What you wont see are the questions, the minutes in your vehicle when all you need to do is shout since child little girl got another late ticket at school, you overlooked your left hoop and youd surrender dessert everlastingly to find a new line of work you truly love. Be that as it may, you know, youre a grown-up now, youve got the opportunity to toughen it out and put on your good show. 25 Things Women Should Stop Apologizing For At Work

25 Things Women Should Stop Apologizing For At Work Its opportunity to quit being heartbroken. A significant number of us were instructed to be pleasant, keep up our best possible behavior, and apologize. Those very much planned (gendered) conduct rules can hurt us in the workplace.Women apologize more than men. Pantene even made an advertisement that featured ourtendency to state sorry. Notwithstanding, note that while assessing a similar arrangement of circumstances, we recognize a greater amount of them asapology-worthycompared to men. All things considered, Im sorry, debilitates your position and places you on edge in the workplace.Save your sorry for when it is required; a troublesome circumstance your colleague is experiencing at home...not before you pose an inquiry. Here are 25 things we should quit saying 'sorry' for at work.1. Chancing upon somebody: Pardon me, is a totally satisfactory reaction when you chance upon an associate. Recognize, however dont apologize.2. Posing an inquiry: Dont start your inquiry with, Im sorry; rather use language like, Excuse me, Could you explain, or I have a question.3. Responding to an inquiry: Youre asked something you dont have the response to. Sick investigate that, or No, I dont have the examination for Asia, is better than apologizing.4. Becoming ill: Whether you remain at home or leave abruptly during the day, don't apologize for falling ill!Presenteeismhurts efficiency; if youre infectious, your colleagues will thank you for staying home.5. Thinking about a relative: If a relative or companion becomes sick or needs assistance following a clinical system, dont apologize for utilizing your downtime to think about them.6. Declining a solicitation: Youre asked by a friend to accomplish something you cant (or shouldnt). Decay without statement of regret; propose different associates or related assets if youd like.7. Mentioning materials: Youre planning for a gathering, and need certain provisions. Express your solicitation, not: Im sorry, yet could get a projector fo r todays session?8. Beginning a gathering: The gathering youre driving is going to start and everybody is as yet talking. Start with, Good evening, lets start, and not, Im sorry to interrupt9. Being occupied: Your partner needs to meet with you, however your schedule is full. Dont apologize; check whether you can skirt an ideal to have meeting or recommend a couple of option dates.10. The Story of Cleavage and Cleavitz® with a Giveaway!

The Story of Cleavage and Cleavitz ® with a Giveaway! We all know how important it is not to show cleavage at work.  But, sometimes it can be tough, right? If you have ever thought about starting a business, the best business ideas are always the ones that you have struggled with yourself.  I love coaching my clients to get unstuck out of jobs they hate and into jobs they love because I was once there myself.  Julie Crotty was a successful business executive with a passion for fashion, and she struggled to find a comfortable and simple way to manage her cleavage. So many of the fashionable tops in her closet were too risqué for work. She needed a way to make them business appropriate during the day, and at the same time, a little more fun at night. So what did she do?  She started a business to solve her problem called Cleavitz ®.  Heres a quote from Julie, For years, I tried the various solutions that were offered in the marketplace: tube tops, bandeau tops, fabrics that taped, snapped or clipped to your bra â€" you name it, I tried it. I just wanted to dress without stress, but every solution I tried provided more challenges instead of less. The tapes didnt stick, the clips were uncomfortable, the half-camisoles slid down too far, and the full tank tops bunched in the middle, added bulky lines, and were just too hot in the summer. I continued my search for a half-tank or camisole that would do the trick. And to my surprise, there was nothing on the market to solve my problem and cover cleavage in a comfortable way. Today Julie wants to give three Classy Career Girl readers a  Cleavitz ® comfortable half-top so that you can dress without the stress! They  have four styles that you can choose from including: cotton, lace, shimmer and their newest addition, crushed velvet. Cleavitz ® is a socially responsible company that is involved in many different charity events and they even donate 2% of all Cleavitz ® revenue towards breast cancer research.  I love it! a Rafflecopter giveaway This giveaway is open US residents only. Why You Want a Low Bus Coefficient - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Why You Want a Low Bus Coefficient - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career The fastest way to get a promotion is to have a Low Bus Coefficient. Of course, there are other less seemly and perhaps unethical ways to get promotions. But, for most people in the modern work world the fastest way to get promotions is to share what you know. The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift. ~ Albert Einstein The point of this post is to think about how you are sharing your knowledge and how you can be more intuitive in the way you share. When you can share more you can and will Stand Out in Your Career. In a sense sharing is a soft skill. Albeit a skill we should have learned in kindergarten, but a skill that too many have been taught to unlearn as they have grown older and into more “competitive” situations. Are there times to keep confidences? Absolutely. Are there times to share what you know? Absolutely. In order to stand out in your career you will want to find a way to balance these two factors and in the process you will lower your bus coefficient. Bus Factor and Lottery Factor These are also terms used to describe a Low Bus Coefficient. Where the idea is … if you walked out the door and were hit by a bus (or won the lottery) what would happen to what you know? This is not an indictment against you … it’s just a way to think about why you should share what you know. Exercise for the Reader Take 1 minute: Think: WHAT would happen if you weren’t there tomorrow? Let’s Talk About The How One way is to have what I call The One Folder Transition Plan or the OFTP. I wrote about this idea I learned from a friend that was deployed in the Persian Gulf back in the early 90’s. The model was as simple as it was elegant. Having a OFTP might sound cynical and perhaps may seem to imply the worst is going to happen, but that was not the intent. The intent was to insure the mission could continue in the absence of a key player. In order for your team and your projects to continue it would be a good idea for you to create your OFTP and to ask each team member to do the same. For more on creating an OFTP see this post I wrote 4 years ago. And, yes, things that are important do have a tendency to come back around and to the forefront. This is the nature of business and life. Plan for your Low Bus Coefficient. Use your intuition to think about what should be shared and if in doubt … ask someone for a Sharing Check. Sharing Check To get a check on whether the information you are sharing is valuable, actionable and reasonable. Sharing is Caring It’s so easy to share today that it’s almost criminal not to share. Whether you use old school paper and pencils or whether you use tools like Enterprise Social Networks, Public Social Networks, Internal Networks or whatever your preferred documentation tool … it’s never been easier. In this day and age its too easy not to share things you know. Between enterprise social networks (ESN’s) which capture a lot of information behind the scenes inside of corporate firewalls and of course public social networks where everything and anything might be shared. Another way to look at sharing and why you, your colleagues, and your company (this is especially true for entrepreneurs) need to think about your Bus Coefficient and how to make sure your keep it as low as possible. Companies do break! Most companies work very hard to ensure customer continuity and care when it comes to sales and services. Read: There is No Free Lunch The Career Benefit of an LCB Having a Low Bus Coefficient makes it much more likely that you will be perceived as knowing your business (because you documented it); and it it massively increases your chances of promotion (because you are showing you are ready); and having an LCB shows that you know how to put your skills in motion â€" which means your can take on bigger projects and have a larger impact on everything you do. From an optimistic perspective: Imagine you were just promoted or allowed to hire new staff member for your team. How are you going to handle it? What will you do first? Read: You were just hit by a bus, now what? Use your Intuition and seek to have a very Low Bus Coefficient â€" Your career will thank you.

9 Killer Tips for Video Interviews

9 Killer Tips for Video Interviews Looking for a job? Its high time to confess that the hiring process is far from what it looked like ten or even five years ago. To keep your eye on the ball and get that dream job, you should be ready for a video interview. Six out of ten hiring managers used video technologies for interviewing three years ago, and their number seemed to grow. Your resume and portfolio of work  are  tickets to an interview, but the interview itself is your ticket to getting the desired position. Both employers and candidates have several reasons to prefer video interviews today: its time-saving and cost saving. A video interview is perfect for the first round,  before the in-person interviews. Thats why you need to  do your best to succeed in it.  How to do that? How to Prepare for Video Interviews At home, even the walls help. In theory, you need nothing but a computer with a webcam and internet access. As far as you are concerned, having this sorted alone will not be enough to succeed. Have a read of these practical preparation tips below: 1. Test all the technologies: Camera, sound, connection, light, and video program â€" make sure that everything works. To check that, you can ask a friend to help you and organize a test interview. Moreover, if you record this test interview, youll have a chance to see how you look and sound to make sure everything is fine. 2. Choose a proper location:  No noises and distractions, good lighting and a generic background which is ideally  a plain wall. Also, make sure its not just your face that can be seen on camera: framing from the  waist up would be ideal. 3.  Dress professionally:  Interviewing from home doesnt make t-shirts and slippers your best friends. Plus, take care of your hairstyle, clean your fingernails, brush your  teeth well and showcase minimal piercings (if you have any) or other  jewelry. No gums or candies in the mouth, and choose a suit you would wear for in-person interviews. 4. Make a list of questions:  Its not only the interviewers who ask questions; you might have some, too. Prepare all possible questions in advance, as well as some notes with  points you might want to highlight during the interview. Certainly, these notes should be off camera. Lets call it your  cheat sheet, designed to  can help you get your dream job . Bonus tip: Turn off all programs and applications that could  interrupt the interview. Tips to Succeed The zero hour has come. You are ready. The technologies and questions are ready, too. You are  looking professional  and ready to impress your interviewers with your knowledge and skills. Now its go-time! 5. Look into the camera:  Dont forget to smile and make eye contact when appropriate. 6. Watch your tone of voice:  Its better to speak in a conversational tone and behave as if you are at the actual interview. 7. Take your time to respond:  Wait for a second before answering the questions, just in case the connection is weak. This will ensure it doesnt look like you are interrupting the interviewer. Bonus tip:  Here are four questions to expect during a video interview. Why are you good for this position? What is your background for this position? What type of environment do you need to work the best? When was the time you overcame obstacles in your career? Do you need any variants to answer these questions? Check the article from the Community Table here. What to Do Afterwards Phew! The interview is over. You did your best! But whats next? Shall I just sit and wait for a call? your first question is, isnt it? 8. Write a thank-you note. If there were several people who interviewed you, send individual emails or notes to each of them. Try to vary your letters a bit in case they decide to compare them. 9. Dont be shy to follow up. Be patient: the hiring process usually takes several rounds, but it doesnt mean you cant follow-up and express your interest. Follow-ups show your desire for the position, but make sure they dont seem as if you are desperate. Bonus tip: Dont forget to ask the interviewer when they expect to make a decision. Bonus tip: Write thank-you notes after every interview, even if you are sure youve failed and the job is not for you. A video interview is your first and important step toward your dream job. Its essential, as it helps you create an initial impression; but dont consider it as one and only round â€" have your resume and portfolio ready. Have you ever been video interviewed? What would your recommendations be? Any personal tips that would help job seekers succeed? About Author: Lesley J.
